What is Upstream Transportation and Distribution?

January 8, 2025Shantanu Singh

Upstream transportation and distribution have to do with the movement and conveyance of the materials coming into the organization from the suppliers before they go through processing or assembly into final goods. Products’ transportation and distribution belong to the upstream indirect emission sources and are defined as Scope 3 emissions.

Understanding Upstream Transportation and Distribution

Some of the activities under transport and distribution that occur at higher levels of the supply chain include transportation of the products through road, railway, water or air and also warehousing and distribution of the transported products. These emissions are useful when calculating the carbon footprint of an organization because the third category makes up a relatively large proportion of overall emissions.

Key Considerations in Upstream Transportation and Distribution

  • Mode of Transport: The type of transport has a strong effect on the level of emissions. For instance, air logistics tend to give rise to higher emission levels per ton-mile than sea or rail logistics.
  • Distance Traveled: The total number of emissions incurred depends on the distance that goods must cover from the suppliers to the organization. It must be noted that generally, the longer the distance traveled, the higher the amount of emission.
  • Energy Efficiency: The emission could also be affected by the fuel efficiency used in transporting vehicles and the use of energy-efficient technologies in warehouses and distribution centers.

Importance of Managing Upstream Transportation and Distribution Emissions

One of the ways of having low emissions is in the upstream transport and distribution of products, and this is capable of being managed to control the emission of an organization. To achieve the reduction of Scope 3 emissions, there is a need to regulate the flow of goods through logistics and transportation and enhance the energy efficiency of delivery vehicles.

FAQs

1. What are upstream transportation and distribution emissions?

Upstream transport and distribution emissions are those emissions that are produced due to the movement and handling of material and products from the suppliers up to the company before conversion of these products or materials into the final product.

2. How can companies reduce emissions from upstream transportation and distribution?

Companies can limit emissions by minimizing the distances traveled by commodities, using energy-efficient means of transportation, and also adopting energy-conserving technologies during storage and handling of the goods.
