What is Renewable Energy?

Renewable energy is, by definition, energy derived from sources that can be replenished on a human time scale including solar power, wind power, water power, wave power, and geothermal energy. Renewable energy resources are more reliable given that they are inexhaustible and have minimal direct emissions compared to fossil fuels which are depleted and when burned they release greenhouse gases that fuel climate change.

Renewable energy technologies use natural processes to produce electric power, heat or mechanical energy. These sources of energy are referred as renewable since they are replenishable and are available in limitless supply in the long run. The most common types of renewable energy include:

  • Wind Energy: Wind turbines convert the kinetic energy of wind into mechanical power, which is then used to generate electricity.

  • Geothermal Energy: Heat from the Earth's interior is used to generate electricity or provide direct heating through geothermal power plants or heat pumps.
  • Biomass Energy: Organic materials, such as wood, agricultural residues, and waste, are burned or processed to produce heat, electricity, or biofuels.
