Land Use and Land Use Change

LULUC can be defined as the direct management and change of the environment from the natural state to a manageable entity like agricultural fields, meadows, and built-up areas and change of use of land. Regarding carbon accounting, LULUC is of highest importance because these activities can be either a source or a sink of green-house gases (GHG). Correct estimation of change is crucial in order to assess their effects on the Carbon cycle and to design sustainable measures to control global climate change.

Understanding Land Use and Land Use Change

Interrelated activities such as agriculture, forestry, housing and urban expansion, wildlife conservation, etc are defined under land use. Land use conversions like, deforestation or conversion of forest for agricultural or urban uses, impact carbon emissions and carbon stock.

  • Deforestation: The clearing or thinning of forests to make land available for other uses, such as agriculture or urban development. Deforestation leads to the release of carbon stored in trees and soil, contributing to GHG emissions.
  • Afforestation and Reforestation: The process of planting trees on previously non-forested or deforested land. These practices can enhance carbon sequestration and help offset carbon emissions.
  • Urbanization: The expansion of urban areas into previously rural or natural landscapes. Urbanization typically leads to an increase in carbon emissions due to the construction of infrastructure and loss of natural carbon sinks.
  • Agricultural Expansion: The conversion of forests, wetlands, and grasslands into agricultural fields, which often results in significant carbon emissions due to the removal of vegetation and soil disturbance.

LULUC activities can have both positive and negative impacts on carbon emissions:

  • Positive Impacts: Practices such as reforestation, afforestation, and sustainable land management can increase carbon sequestration and reduce overall emissions.
  • Negative Impacts: Activities like deforestation, draining of wetlands, and urban expansion can lead to the release of large amounts of carbon stored in vegetation and soil, contributing to global warming.

Measuring LULUC in Carbon Accounting

The measurement of carbon emissions in LULUC therefore entails determining changes in biomass and soil carbon stock; as well as emissions corresponding to such changes. This measurement is important to enable countries and organizations to give their emission reports and to come up with plans in minimizing their emissions.
