What is the Greenhouse Effect? 

The greenhouse effect is a natural process that warms the Earth’s surface. It’s when certain gases in the Earth’s atmosphere trap heat so it can’t escape back into space. These gases, known as greenhouse gases, let sunlight in but absorb and re-radiate heat. This keeps the Earth’s temperature just right for life.

Concept of the Greenhouse Effect: 

The concept of the greenhouse effect can be explained by how sunlight interacts with the Earth’s atmosphere. When solar energy hits the Earth, it’s either reflected into space or absorbed by the Earth’s surface. The Earth’s surface then emits this energy as infrared radiation (heat). Greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide (CO₂), methane (CH₄) and nitrous oxide (N₂O) absorb and re-radiate some of this heat back to the surface, warming the planet. Without the greenhouse effect, the Earth would be too cold for life.

Types of Greenhouse Gases:

  1. Carbon Dioxide (CO₂): A principal contributor to the greenhouse effect, contributing approximately 60%. It is mainly released through the combustion of conventional fuel, such as coal, oil, and natural gas, the burning of forests, and human activities.
  2. Methane (CH₄): Known as the most potent greenhouse gas because it has a very high heat absorbing capacity compared to CO2 that results from agriculture, livestock, landfills, as well as natural gas production.
  3. Nitrous Oxide (N₂O): Also known as N2 O, it is released primarily through land farming, synthetic fertilization, and a few industrial operations that involve the use of similar fertilizers.
  4. Water Vapor (H₂O): the most frequently emitted greenhouse gas and has an important function in temperature control. Whereas human activities are not directly concerned with water vapor rather its regulation lies in the domain of temperature.
  5. Ozone (O₃): Ozone is located in the stratosphere where it is employed in an industrial region to shield the Earth from dangerous ultraviolet radiation but over time it slowly reduces the ground ozone making a hole in the upper atmosphere that contributes to the greenhouse effect.

Features of the Greenhouse Effect:

  1. Heat Trapping: Greenhouse gases inevitably retain heat in the Earth’s atmosphere to make it habitable.
  2. Regulation of Earth's Climate: A primary process to control the temperate of the Earth is the greenhouse effect. Without it, the planet would be approximately 33 degrees Celsius colder.
  3. Increased Carbon Emissions: Activities that humans undertake such as burning fossil fuels release more quantities of CO₂ and other green house gases, making the greenhouse effect strong and resulting in global warming.
  4. Feedback Loops: The greenhouse effect can create conditions for positive feedback, for instance, the melting of the North Pole, which results in a lesser reflection of sunlight and leads to an increase in temperature.

  • Carbon Sequestration: Managing natural processes like afforestation and reforestation that absorb CO₂ from the atmosphere.
