Fossil fuels are generated from the organic materials of ancient plants and animals which was buried and underwent a process of transformation through heat and pressure for millions of years. Three major sources of fossil fuels are coal, oil, and natural gas. These fuels are finite and their extraction and use have adverse effects on the environment, most notably the emissions of greenhouse gases.
Understanding Fossil Fuels
They are energy resources for the majority of industries, transportation systems, and electrical power plants globally. They are made mainly with carbon and hydrogen and when exposed to fire, they give out heat energy. Nevertheless, the burning of fossil fuels causes carbon dioxide (CO2) and other gases that causes climate change.
Types of Fossil Fuels
- Coal: A dense and stable hydrocarbon base which is used majorly in electric power production and processes. CO2 emissions are high when it is burned making it the largest producer of this gas amongst the various fossil fuels.
- Oil: A hydrocarbon which exists in liquid state at the normal temperature and pressure and is useful in automobiles as a fuel and in industries as a feed stock. It is also one of the leading causes of CO2 emitters around the world.
- Natural Gas: It is a gaseous fossil fuel applied for power production, heating purposes and as a raw material for manufacturing processes. Though, it puts out less CO2 than coal and oil, it remains a source of greenhouse gas emissions including methane (CH4).
Environmental Impact of Fossil Fuels
The extraction, processing, and burning of fossil fuels have several environmental consequences:
- Climate Change: CO2 emissions are prominent in fossil fuels which leads to global warming and climatic change.
- Air Pollution: Fossil fuel combustion emits SO2, NOx and particulate matter into the atmosphere which results in air pollution and adverse health effects.
- Habitat Destruction: Oil exploitation including mining and drilling can cause degradation of habitats, water pollution, and loss of species.
- Resource Depletion: Since fossil fuels are known to be exhaustible, they drain resources in the earth which cannot be replenished.
Transitioning Away from Fossil Fuels
In an effort to minimize carbon emissions and climate change, countries aim for converting energy systems from fossil-based energy systems to renewable systems like wind, solar, and hydroelectric power systems. This shift is useful in getting a sustainable power system and decrease energy’s effect on the environment.
