Carbon pricing is a policy intervention aimed at using market incentives to change the behavior of organizations releasing greenhouse gases, in particular carbon dioxide (CO₂). It makes it costly for firms and businesses to pollute, thereby creating incentives for decreasing emissions and investing in cleaner forms of development.

Carbon pricing means that a price is put on each ton of CO₂ and other greenhouse gases emitted, and that price is in the form of money. This cost can be fixed either by the introduction of a carbon tax or by implementing the cap and trade policy in which the polluters have to pay.

Those industries that have managed to bring down their emissions can be able to sell the excess permits to the other industries that require the permits, making emission reductions pay.
