What is the Air Quality Index?

The Air Quality Index (AQI) is a tool that can be used to detect how clean or polluted the air is in a specific location. It uses a number to indicate the levels of major pollutants such as particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), ozone, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and carbon monoxide. 

Importance of the Air Quality Index

The AQI is crucial for:

  1. Public Health Awareness: It updates the community regarding the current air quality and potential health risks.  
  2. Policy and Regulation: AQI is used by authorities to enforce policies and regulations aimed to manage air quality. 
  3. Environmental Protection: The AQI helps track pollution levels and support actions to enhance air quality.
  4. Personal Decision Making: People can use AQI to decide what outdoor activities to engage in. 

How to Interpret the Air Quality Index

The AQI is split into various categories, each indicating a different level of health concern:

  • 0-50 (Good): Air quality is good, posing no risk of air pollution.
  • 51-100 (Moderate): Air quality is acceptable; however, there could be potential risks to people with heightened sensitivity to air pollution. 
  • 101-150 (Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups): Sensitive groups may be exposed to health effects. The general public is less likely to be affected.
  • 151-200 (Unhealthy): Everyone may start to experience health effects; sensitive groups may experience more serious health effects.
  • 201-300 (Very Unhealthy): Health alert; everyone may suffer more serious health effects.
  • 301-500 (Hazardous): The entire population is at a higher risk of being exposed to emergency health conditions.

  1. Monitoring Stations: Fixed stations that track level of pollutants. 
  2. Mobile Units: Vehicles installed with sensors to gauge air quality in various locations.
  3. Satellite Data: Gives detailed coverage of air quality over large areas.
  4. Citizen Science: Community-based tracking efforts.

How is the AQI calculated?

The AQI is determined by figuring out the amount of certain pollutants in the air. Using specific formulas, these concentrations are then converted into their AQI value. 

What actions should be taken during high AQI levels?

During high AQI levels, people should remain indoors, especially those who are vulnerable, such as children, the elderly, and those with respiratory issues. Officials may also need to put some temporary regulations in place to reduce emissions.
