May 2025 Product Updates: FR ADEME & Bulk Import for Footwear Products

We’ve been hard at work at Carbon Trail, and in May, we released some powerful features to make life easier for fashion brands measuring their environmental impact, especially those working with complex product categories like footwear.

🥾 Bulk Upload Support for Complex Products like Footwear

Managing data for products with intricate hierarchies — like footwear — can be overwhelming. That’s why we’ve launched a new bulk import capability called “Products Advanced”, designed specifically for complicated product structures.

Now, you can upload footwear products with:

  • Hierarchical components such as Upper, Vamp, Lining, Sock, Outsole

  • Tertiary material breakdowns, like fabrics and EVA

  • Supplier and composition details, all the way to material percentages

Using our intelligent import workflow, you can upload your structured Excel or CSV file and have it automatically mapped to Carbon Trail’s internal schema.

Our AI-powered system intelligently detects and corrects typos (like “polystr” to “polyester”), expands short forms (such as “PE” to “polyethylene”), and highlights incorrect composition (60% EVA, 20% Polyester – missing 20%?) — saving you hours of manual cleanup. Once mapped, you can instantly preview, validate, and import multiple products in one seamless flow.

Once imported, you can immediately approve them for footprint calculations, and drill down into impacts at the most granular level — including raw material, subcomponent, and manufacturing phase emissions.

🇫🇷 Full Support for FR ADEME — France’s Official Environmental Labeling Methodology

We’re thrilled to announce full support for the FR ADEME methodology, a critical regulatory framework that is fast becoming a compliance requirement for fashion brands operating in France.

What is FR ADEME?
ADEME (Agence de la transition écologique) is France’s environmental agency that has developed a standardized methodology for calculating and communicating the environmental impact of consumer products, especially textiles and footwear.
It’s part of France’s push for environmental transparency under the French Climate and Resilience Law, which mandates environmental labeling for consumer goods, beginning with apparel and footwear.

What’s new with ADEME-based LCAs in Carbon Trail?

  • ♻️ Raw materials: We now include microfiber shedding impacts — a critical but often overlooked contributor to environmental pollution.

  • 🧪 Manufacturing: ADEME requires accounting for chemical emissions through enriched life cycle inventories, which we’ve fully integrated.

  • 🛠️ End of life: We track the environmental impact of exporting discarded clothing outside the EU — a reality that many LCA methodologies ignore, but ADEME emphasizes.

On top of this, you can now adjust durability-related settings such as the number of SKUs sold (range width) and whether warranties are provided. These factors directly affect your product’s environmental score, just as outlined in the ADEME methodology, helping you demonstrate longer-lasting, more sustainable products.

By aligning with ADEME, Carbon Trail not only helps you meet regulatory demands but also equips you with more granular, transparent, and credible impact data — enabling better communication with consumers and partners in the EU.
